Domain Name Scams

WWW.ART Design Services would like to warn businesses about domain name scams.

Email based domain name renewal scam

As part of this scam the notification received by the registrant of a domain claims Registration Expiry, listing the domain name of the registrant. If the recipient reads carefully, the message mentions that the registration expiry notice is in fact for “Search Engine Submission” services. However the recipients did not subscribe to this service in the first place, which means that the message merely appears as a “Domain Registration Renewal notice”, aimed at fooling the recipient to pay it as a means of extending their domain registration license.

Customers should ignore any such emails and contact their domain name supplier for further information.

Domain Registration scam from “Domain Name Group Pty Ltd”

This is an official looking invoice from the “Domain Name Group Pty Ltd” (ACN: 135 462 305). This group is sending out invoices for payment of domain registration for a .net.au version of their .com.au domains. The invoice appears as a renewal invoice for the original domain name, and is misleading customers with a call to action to pay for the domain registration.

WWW.ART would like to warn businesses against registering the .net.au domain equivalents with Domain Name Group Pty Ltd. The charges per registration are disproportionately high to normal domain name pricing.

In conclusion

Domain registrants should always be wary of such communications. Some of these companies send out unsolicited renewal notices up to 10 months before your domain name is due to be renewed.

You should be extremely careful about how you renew your domain name. If your domain name was registered through a reputable Domain Registration Service, renewal notices will be forwarded to you within an appropriate time frame and will not require your password.

Should you have any concerns about a letter, phone call or email you have received and would like to determine if it's a legitimate communication, please feel free to contact us at WWW.ART Design Services.

If you believe you have received unsolicited marketing material with regards to your domain name renewal, or been misled about your domain renewal, you should also contact the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC)
